update long overdue

So, I moved into a new place. I'm living in Lafayette now. Some good news is that I was able to take my garden with me. I also expanded with more herbs. I have added Lemon Verbena, Spearmint, Rosemary, Stevia, Chamomile, Sage (also some flowering sages), and Mexican Mint Marigold, Epizote, English Lavender, and French Thyme to what I already had. All the plants are getting big! The beans have exceeded the height of their bamboo teepee. The tomatoes have gotten quite large with several small green fruits.

Below the beans and tomatoes you can see the French Lavender, which I moved from the large planter into a 14" pot, and now seems to be dying :( You can also see the Mint and Epizote in the smaller terra cotta pots, and my little collection of sage (including the culinary variety) in the plastic pot.
Below, you can see the first of the tomato and bean flowers. I now have tiny fruits on both, and they seem to be doing well.
The only thing I have sampled from the garden is kale. I have thinned it a couple of times and used it in soup or stir-fry. It was really good. I hope to see some more of these ladybugs in the garden, because yesterday I found a whole society of aphids living on one kale plant! They didn't seem to have spread significantly to any of the other plant so I harvested it, washed the leaves and added them to a bowl of soup. I have had no problems with squirrels yet, but the bugs are starting to get hungry. I also found some little green caterpillar things on some of the kale. I guess I may have to try one of those expensive little containers of ladybugs they sell at the nursery if things get much worse.

Here is a shot of the front porch of my new apartment. It's only 400 sqft., but it's a very functional space, and has a large, south-facing, sliding glass door in the front (as you can see). My neighbors and landlord are great. Actually, my neighbor (Ron) in the unit next to mine, is growing a garden for the first time this year also. We have been sharing advice and helping each other out a bit. I'll tell you more about it next time.
